Asimina triloba 'Sunflower'
Fruiting Pawpaw

Native Fruit Tree

Zones 4b-8

'Sunflower’ is native selection of a pawpaw tree that produce large crops of banana flavored to custard flavored oblong fruits. Mid spring flowers develop into fruit for the fall. ‘Sunflower’ is said to be a late ripening pawpaw, which will extend your fruit season into later in the year. ‘Sunflower’ was found in the wild in Kansas and selected by Milo Gibson for its prolific and consistent fruit production. The fruit is oblong and yellow-green to brown in color. The fruit is highly desired by fruit aficionados, native plant enthusiasts and homesteaders. Fall color on pawpaw trees is a bright golden yellow adding some garden interest to this edible ornamental. ‘Sunflower’ may reach 15 ft in height and width in 10 years. ‘Sunflower’ is said to be a self-fertile selection, but it is likely conditional for this to occur. For best pollination and a large crop of fruit, it is recommended to plant multiple types of cultivars or seedlings in an area.
