Acer palmatum 'Hitode'
Dwarf Starfish
Japanese Maple

Zones 5-9

'Hitode' is rare selection by Talon Buchholz that has leaves that cup downward like a starfish. According to Talon, he visited Vergeldt Nursery and said that one of their newest selections looked like a Starfish. It became 'Peve Starfish'. Not realizing the Vergeldt's would take his advice, Talon independently found 'Hitode', which is named "starfish" in Japanese. According to notes Talon sent me years ago, he introduced 'Hitode' in 2005 and believes there may be some Acer shirasawanum heritage in this Japanese maple. I would agree as the leaves are very full moon-like.

'Hitode' leafs out in the spring as a mauve purple, turning to green as the summer approaches. For us 'Hitode' is slow to moderate grower, reaching 6-8 ft in 15 years. Give 'Hitode' protection from the hot afternoon sun. I would expect 'Hitode' to turn yellow to orange in the fall.

Our 6 gallons ship in 48" box. It's rare to see 'Hitode' offered, let alone older trees that can still be shipped.  Photos of the typical size of a 6 gallon can be seen in the third photo
