Acer palmatum 'Purple Mask' is a striking Japanese maple known for its brick red foliage throughout the growing season, 'Purple Mask' is an upright, vigorous cultivar reaching 8–10 ft tall in 10 years. This heat-tolerant selection shines in warm climates, maintaining its rich coloration even in full sun. Come autumn, the foliage transforms into a vibrant yellow to orange, making it one of the best Japanese maples for fall color. Selected by Harold Johnston of Alabama, 'Purple Mask' has proven reliable in southern gardens. It also holds botanical interest as the parent of 'Beni shi en', a variegated sport discovered from its lineage.
