Rhododendron alabamense

White Blooms - Yellow Splotch

Deciduous Native Azalea

Zones 7-8

Rhododendron alabamense, more commonly known as the "Alabama azalea" has a large floppy white flower with a lemon yellow blotch on the upper petals. This gives a nice clean oranmental appeal with all the positives you love about native plants.  The blooms are great for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Rhododendron alabamense grows in drier woodlands than most native azaleas. This makes this native azalea especially popular for the landscape and garden. Rhododendron alabamense is a native selection of deciduous azalea from Alabama & Georgia with clusters of tubular flowers that are lemon scented. Rhododendron alabamense may reach 5-6 ft in height by 3-4 ft in width in 10 years. It was described as a new species in 1921 by Alabama botanist, Charles Mohr, from plants found in Cullman County.
