'Gulf Pride’ is a large blooming southern indica azalea with a light purple color. The bloom itself has a darker blotch making a nice up-close appeal. ‘Gulf Pride’ is an excellent selection that was found as a sport off Rhododendron mucronulatum and introduced by Kosaku Sawada, a famous camellia breeder. Sawada left Japan and moved to the United States in the early 1900’s becoming heavily influential in the horticultural industry through his plant breeding and introductions. ‘Gulf Pride’ was said to be a branch sport mutation that was named after the Alabama region Mr. Sawada lived in. ‘Gulf Pride’ may reach 4 ft in height by 4 ft in width in 10 years. Plant ‘Gulf Pride’ near the walkway so that you can enjoy the fragrance as you pass by.
