Acer palmatum dissectum 'Hana matoi'
Deep Red Variegated Weeping Japanese Maple

Zones 5-9

花まとい(ハナマトイ)

Introduced by Yutaka Tanaka of Tsukasa Nursery in Japan, 'Hana matoi' is one of the most exciting cultivars in the nursery trade. This laceleaf cultivar leaves out in the early spring as bright red with hot pink variegation. As the season progresses this lovely tree's red color deepens in full sun. In more shaded areas 'Hana matoi' will green up and show a combination of white and pink variegation. Whether in sun or shade this cultivar puts on a show that will take your breath away.

During the fall the red and pink intensify for an even more stunning display. The shape of 'Hana matoi' forms a cascading umbrella eventually reaching a height of about 6 ft.

We originally thought that a translation of 'Hana matoi' translates as 'flower mark', or possibly 'mark of the flower'. When looking at this laceleaf from a distance the variegation on the red background may be mistaken as pink flowers. After visiting Tsukasa Maple in Japan, we learned the true meaning of this name.  “Hana” means flower while “matoi” were large totems carried by those heralding firemen where coming during the Edo Period in Japan. Firemen were considered heroes and perceived in status similar to samurai. These matoi were heavily decorated with large decorated tassels hanging down. The name originated from this Japanese maple looks like a Matoi decorated in flowers.

In Yano's Book for Maples, he states that this cultivar is one of the most spectacular cultivars ever recorded.

Trees were potted from large liners to gallons in late August.
