Acer japonicum 'Mai kujaku' | Cultivar Spotlight
Acer japonicum 'Mai kujaku'
Zones: 5-9
'Mai kujaku' is an upright cultivar of the japonicum species, known for its exaggerated features compared to the palmatum species. In early spring, its larger, deep red blooms stand out against the bright green leaves, creating a striking contrast. The large leaves have long, fern-like lobes that add to the tree's unique appearance. Throughout the summer, 'Mai kujaku' maintains a beautiful deep green coloration.
As autumn approaches, 'Mai kujaku' transforms into a spectacular display of color. The deep green leaves develop a brilliant "fire engine red" border that gradually overtakes the entire leaf, shifting through magnificent shades of red and orange. Its name, meaning "dancing peacock," aptly describes the vibrant fall display. Often sold in nurseries as 'Aconitifolium' or referred to as a "fern leaf" or "full moon" maple tree, 'Mai kujaku' has an upright, multi-branching habit and can reach 15 feet in height over 20 years. This striking cultivar adds a stunning presence to any landscape.
