Acer palmatum 'Kuro hime' | Cultivar Spotlight
Acer palmatum 'Kuro hime'
'Kuro hime' is a distinctive variety of dwarf Japanese maple that originates from Kyoto, Japan. It was introduced to the United States in 2008. During the early spring, this Japanese maple showcases vibrant pink-red leaves that gradually transition to a bluish-green hue by mid-summer. The pink-red foliage that emerges during the secondary flush resembles delicate flowers against the backdrop of the blueish green leaves. The name 'Kuro' signifies the black-red color of the new growth, while 'hime' typically translates to princess. This name aptly captures the captivating beauty of this compact Japanese maple. Despite its miniature size, 'Kuro hime' displays exceptional vigor, growing upright and dense, reaching a height of 4-5 ft. In the autumn, the foliage transforms into a brilliant shade of red. Due to its compact nature, 'Kuro hime' is an excellent choice for smaller spaces in the landscape or for container gardening.
