Acer robustum Rare Chinese Maple

Introduction: Acer robustum, also known as Acer ceriferum, is an exceptionally rare maple belonging to the section Palmata, series Palmata. This Chinese maple is characterized by its extremely round leaves, reminiscent of a full-moon maple, with increased pubescence in early spring.

Growth: Specimens of Acer ceriferum have been successfully cultivated in Chapel Hill, NC, and Philadelphia, PA, showcasing its hardiness and suitability as a mid-sized landscape tree. Over 20 years, this tree can reach a height of approximately 15 feet.

Frost Resistance: Acer robustum is notably frost resistant, adding to its appeal as a durable and resilient addition to various climates.

Fall Color: The fall foliage is spectacular, with vibrant neon yellows transitioning to orange, creating a striking autumn display.

Scientific Note: Recent research by Peter Gregory, published through the Maple Society's Open Science initiative, suggests that Acer robustum should technically be referred to as Acer anhweiense.
