Ghost Series

Acer Palmatum 'First Ghost'

'First Ghost' is the first and one of the best of the Ghost series of Japanese maples. 'First Ghost' leafs out in the early spring with bright white to cream sharply divided leaves which are accented by deep green veining to the leaf on the inside while the outside of the leaf is edged in a red purple.
Mid-summer this reticulated variegation on 'First Ghost' may fade to a dark green veining on a lighter green background. For best and longest spring coloration, protection from the hot afternoon sun is recommended. Growing in a semi-pendulous habit, First Ghost reaches 10-12 ft in 15 years with an equal spread. Fall colors are bright golden yellows to orange. 'First Ghost' is gorgeous Japanese maple and is a necessity for any garden.

Acer Palmatum 'Purple Ghost'

‘Purple Ghost’ is a very striking tree that adds a blast of color. This leaf has deep lavender and purple colors divided by a dark maroon reticulated vein. Acer palmatum 'Purple Ghost' is heavily sought after for its dynamic color. The growth habit is upright with dense branching in semi-pendulous habit.
‘Purple Ghost’ grows to 8-10 feet tall and wide in 15 years. Filtered evening sun is suggested to bring out the best colors. 'Purple Ghost' captures a landscape with its dramatic show of deep lavender and purple. This selection by our friend Talon Buchholz is a spectacular selection. This is a tree you will want in your garden.

Acer Palmatum 'Sister Ghost'

'Sister Ghost' leafs out in the spring as bright yellow-green with deep green veining. This almost eerie reticulated variegation on 'Sister Ghost' is where this selection gets the "ghost" part of its name. The leaf on 'Sister Ghost' has lobes that are extremely incised and jagged in appearance, adding to the mystique of this unique Japanese maple.
In the fall, Sister Ghost turns to a bright golden yellow and, in some years, it becomes infused with orange. Sister Ghost may reach up to 8-10 ft in height and width in 15 years. For best colors on this Sister Ghost Japanese maple, we recommend protection from the hot afternoon sun. This maple is highly prized by collectors because it produces a light wave of color, so get yours before we are sold out.

Acer Palmatum 'Amber Ghost'

'Amber Ghost' is one of the most amazing maples of them all. It leafs out in the early spring as a coral pink with green veining throughout the leaf. Most plants are named for their spring or fall color. This plant is named for its mid-summer coloration. Mid-summer colors are a rich amber with a deep green reticulation throughout the leaf. Fall colors are bright oranges to fire-engine reds. It will reach 8-10 ft in height 15 years in a semi-pendulous habit.

Acer Palmatum 'Grandma Ghost'

The leaf on 'Grandma Ghost' is elegant, yet complex, in it's beauty. 'Grandma Ghost' leafs out with a bright creamy foliage with deep green reticulated veins in the early spring. This member of the Ghost series of Japanese maples is a maple that will grab attention in the garden. 'Grandma Ghost' can reach 8-10 ft in height and width with age. Fall color on 'Grandma Ghost' ranges from bright oranges to bright crimson reds.
For best color and longest display of reticulated variegation, give 'Grandma Ghost' protection from the hot afternoon sun. This will allow 'Grandma Ghost' to shine and brighten those darker shady spots in the garden.

Acer Palmatum 'Uncle Ghost'

'Uncle Ghost' is one of the harder to find of the ghost series. It is striking and with its peach to pink spring foliage that is heavily reticulated, fading to a cream with emerald green veins that etch intricate patterns throughout the leaf. 'Uncle Ghost' turns to oranges to reds in the fall. 'Uncle Ghost' may reach 6-8 ft in 10 years. Give 'Uncle Ghost' protection from the hot afternoon sun for best color and growth.

Acer Palmatum 'Baby Ghost'

'Baby Ghost' leafs out in the spring as a deep amber to red with green reticulated veins. 'Baby Ghost' is the shortest of the Ghost series of Japanese maples. Baby Ghost forms an upright Japanese maple tree to 6-8 ft with a broad spreading canopy that is almost as wide as it is tall. Fall colors are bright oranges to red. It is one of the hardest in the Ghost series to find and is a true gem.

Acer Palmatum 'Dark Ghost'

‘Dark Ghost’ is the newest variegated selection from the Ghost Series by Talon Buchholz. The dark purple leaves are darkly reticulated. Fall color can be bright crimson red to bright scarlet red. ‘Dark Ghost’ is new, but we expect it to get 8-10 ft in height in 10 years.

Acer Palmatum 'Ghost Dancer'

'Ghost Dancer' leafs out in the early spring with purple tipping and a deep green veining over a creamy white to green leaf. For longest display of color, it is recommended to give 'Ghost Dancer' protection from the hot afternoon sun. 'Ghost Dancer' may reach 8 ft in 15 years.
'Ghost Dancer' originated at a nursery near Gaston, Oregon, separately from the reticulated variegated Japanese maples selected by Buchholz Nursery that became the Ghost series. While this maple is not officially part of the Ghost series, 'Ghost Dancer' does bare a close likeness to these reticulated beauties.
