Nicholsonii | Cultivar Spotlight
Acer palmatum 'Nicholsonii'
Contrary to its name, the Nichols brothers did not introduce Acer palmatum 'Nicholsonii', a magnificent Japanese maple. The tree boasts large, sharply pointed dark green leaves that transform into a stunning bright crimson to cherry red hue during fall. Its samaras are cherry red, making them stand out against the green foliage in late summer to early fall. 'Nicholsonii' can grow up to 12 ft in height and width within a decade, and although it was first described in 1893, it is still a beloved selection. This cultivar thrives in Zones 5 through 9 and would be a great addition to any garden.
