Acer palmatum 'Oregon Sunset'

The 'Oregon Sunset' Japanese maple is a stunning tree that leafs out early in spring, displaying large, plum-colored, rounded leaves with lateral but slightly upright branching. It grows into a mid-sized spreading tree, reaching about 7ft in height by 10ft wide in 20 years. This makes it an ideal choice for small garden spaces. In the fall, the leaves turn brilliant shades of orange and red, resembling a sunset. To create an even smaller tree, trim out the central leader at an early age, resulting in a wide-spreading red Japanese maple with large palmate leaves. It does well in Zones 5 through 9 and requires protection from hot afternoon sun for best growth.
