Sango Kaku | Cultivar Spotlight
Acer palmatum 'Sango kaku'
The 'Sango kaku' Japanese maple is a stunning tree with large coral bark that adds a pop of bright red to any landscape, year-round. In early spring, its lush green leaves often have red edging. As autumn arrives, the leaves turn into a beautiful bright gold-yellow, complementing the coral bark perfectly.
For optimal growth, 'Sango kaku' thrives in sun to filtered light, as heavy shade can wash out the bark color on some coral barks. Over time, this tree can reach up to 20-25ft in height. Interestingly, the best time to appreciate 'Sango kaku' is after the leaves have fallen, as the cool temperatures brighten the coral bark, creating a stunning contrast with snowfall. This tree is a must-have for year-round color and is best grown in zones 6 through 9.
