Acer campbellii ssp. flabellatum
Rare Chinese Maple
Zones 7b-9
Acer campbellii ssp. flabellatum is a Japanese maple cousin from China that you rarely see in the nursery trade. Acer campbellii ssp flabellataum has bright red to purple red new growth in the spring with long pointed lobes. This matures to a kelly green. Fall color can be yellow, orange, or red.
Acer campbellii ssp flabellatum may be reffered as Acer flabellatum by some botanists, but species and subspecies status appears to change constantly in Flora China, the leading authority on the subject. We agree with Oterdoom, that if the chemical structures are identical, then then it isn't a new species. This particular clone traces back to one at Westonbirt Arboretum in England. This Acer campbelllii ssp flabellatum is grafted onto Acer palmatum.
Acer campbellii ssp flabelllatum may reach 15 ft in height in 10 years. Natively this maple comes from a temperate forest in different provinces in China. Make sure to give this clone protection form the hot afternoon sun for best success in garden.
Limited Quantities Available !! As we have over a thousand cultivars of Japanese maples, we often do not have many of each cultivar. We recommend that you buy the Japanese maples you want immediately as we often sell out of certain selections.
