Acer palmatum 'Killarney'
Exceptional Fall Color Fascination Japanese Maple
Zones 5-9
'Killarney' leafs out in the early spring with light green heavily matsumurae leaf which turns to a rich green by mid-summer. The habit of 'Killarney' is a mid-sized upright overall with semi-pendulous branching that cascade slightly creating a large bouquet of yellows infused with oranges and reds in the fall. Introduced in the early 1980s by the late Dick Wolff of Red Maple Nursery in Pennsylvania (the same nursery that introduced 'Emperor 1', 'Moonfire', 'Green Mist' and many other classics).
'Killarney' is a more English form of the Irish word "Cill Airne" which translates as "Church of Sloes". The city of Killarney in Ireland is the location of the famous St. Mary's Cathedral. This Japanese maple is extremely hardy and can handle full sun in most gardens and landscapes. A unique feature of seedlings from 'Killarney' is that many of them are semi-pendulous, heavily pendulous, or even heavily cascading like the Acer palmatum dissectum. 'Killarney' is very unique and a true treasure in the garden.
Limited Quantities Available !! As we have over a thousand cultivars of Japanese maples, we often do not have many of each cultivar. We recommend that you buy the Japanese maples you want immediately as we often sell out of certain selections.
