Check out this shantung selection by the current President of the North American Branch of the Maple Society. This is Acer truncatum 'Golden Dragon'. Keith chose the perfect name for this tree. The sub-lobes on this shantung maple are quite different that your typical truncatum. They are actually more dissected and oriental in appearance which is quite reminiscent of the goatee on a Chinese dragon.
This tree is extremely vigorous reaching up to 25-35 feet turning a brilliant shade of golden yellow in the fall. This tree was selected to withstand the high heat and sun of Texas, so it makes a great fit anywhere in the South and for anyone looking for a tree that will thrive in that southern exposure spot in your yard.
