Acer palmatum 'Peve Multicolor'

Rare Multi-colored Japanese Maple Tree

Zones 5-9

First and foremost, it should be explained that this tree is inconsistent in its variegation, but in the years where this variegation occurs, 'Peve Multicolor' is one of the most amazing Japanese maples of our 1000 cultivars at our nursery. Some claim that this tree reverts but this is not the case. Like 'Ukigumo' there are some years where the environmental conditions cause it to variegate heavily and other years where it rarely variegates at all. Morning sun and afternoon shade gives this selection the best chance to variegate heavily. Rain conditions and temperature also play a factor. It is perceived the colder the winter, that the higher the break up of the pigmentation of colors within the leaf will allow a higher display of variegation.

In the years this tree variegates it leafs out with a heavily sandusting reticulation where the leaf is nearly entirely white with green veining and a pinkish purple border. Morning sun with protection from the hot afternoon sun allows this variegation to display throughout most of the year. Mid-summer the white sand dusting is still present while the leaf becomes more green and loses the spring border. Fall colors are bright golden yellows to orange. In the years 'Peve Multicolor' does not variegate it leaves out as a bright chartreuse green with a purple-red border. By mid-summer it loses this purple-red border turning to a solid green. Fall colors are again a bright golden yellow to orange. Sometimes 'Peve Multicolor' is spelled as 'Peve Multicolour'.

I took a chance on this maple and so far I’ve been surprised The Palmatum leaves are small, roughy the size of a half dollar coin. Currently, the leaves are a dark green with a hit of red in mid-summer,

Peve Multicolor holds up well in high heat and humidity but definitely has to have afternoon shade! By mistake I let it sit in the hot afternoon sun for a few hours and a couple of its leave’s scorched. This cultivar is very sensitive to light but recovered quickly.

Peve Multicolor also likes a lot of water. I live in East-Central Georgia where afternoon and evening thunderstorms can be severe. This little guy received 4 inches of rain in one evening and he lovedI all that rain in his little one gallon pot. He perked right up but please make sure the soil / pot are well draining.
If this maple were comparably to any others I would say it’s a lot like Ukigumo and has all the seasonal color changes of Firefly.
As always, Peve Multicolor arrived beautiful packaged and in perfect condition. Buy from MrMaple, they are the best in the business!
