'Sawa chidori' leafs out with a creamy pink to green leaves with darker rich green veins. This type of "ghost variegation" is quite attractive and gives a great spring interest.  As the leaves mature later in the summer, more chlorophyll comes into the leaf giving more green to the leaf. Acer palmatum 'Sawa chidori' was found as a chance amoenum seedling in Japan in the Shizuoka Prefecture in Japan and introduced into cultivation in 1988. 'Sawa chidori' may reach 8 ft in height in 15 years. Fall color on 'Sawa chidori' is a bright red. We recommend giving 'Sawa chidori' protection from the hot afternoon sun.
