Acer palmatum 'Shaina'
Dwarf Red 'Shaina' Japanese Maple

Zones 5-9

Many nurserymen say that spotting broom mutations in ornamental trees is a skill that is learned. Once learned, one will find many brooms in all types of trees. One of the best broom-hunting nurserymen in the country was the late Dick Wolfe of Red Maple Nursery in Pennsylvania. Dick found ‘Shaina’ as a witch’s broom in a large Bloodgood-type Japanese maple planted in front of the Department of Public Safety Building at the Villanova University and named by Billy Schwartz.

If you plan on visiting the broom, which hangs about 9 ft in the air off of its “parent” tree, make sure to get permission from the University Police. Undoubtedly, our experience is that you will still get questioned by every University police officer that enters the building. Dick was a good friend and mentor to Billy Schwartz of Green Mansion Nurseries. ‘Shaina’ was named after Billy’s daughter.

The name ‘Shaina’ is Hebrew for “beautiful”, which is quite fitting for such a pretty Japanese maple. ‘Shaina’ performs exceptionally well for us here in the south. It leafs out as a bright red, maturing to a deeper red that holds fairly well throughout the summer. Fall colors are bright crimson reds. In 15 years, ‘Shaina’ may reach 3-4 ft by 3-5 ft in a dense manner. Being a slower grower, ‘Shaina’ is great for small spaces and container.

Limited Quantities Available !! As we have over a thousand cultivars of Japanese maples, we often do not have many of each cultivar. We recommend that you buy the Japanese maples you want immediately as we often sell out of certain selections.

Bang for the buck

I received a 1 GALLON that is almost 4 feet tall. It’s 40 inches from the root flare to the tip. They had to bend the tips over to fit it in the box. It is so tall and leggy that I questioned whether or not it’s actually Shaina. As a comparison, I stopped by my local nursery which only carries a few popular varieties, and they have a couple Shaina’s. They’re less than half the size and more than twice the price. Mr. Maple sells robust specimens at an unbelievable bargain.
