Acer palmatum 'Oridono nishiki' Pink Variegated Japanese Maple
Acer palmatum 'Oridono nishiki'
Rare Pink Variegated
Oridono nishiki Japanese Maple
Zones 5-9
This very old and unique Japanese maple puts on a show from early spring until late in the fall. When this variegated Japanese maple leafs out every leaf serves as a green canvas which is uniquely painted with colors of pink and white variegation. This makes this Japanese maple one of my favorite to photograph as every photo took turns out different. During the fall, this cultivar turns to a shade of gold, as seen above. This variegated Japanese maple follows up this act by turning to a bright red to deep maroon.
This stunning Japanese maple typically reaches up to around 12 ft in 15 years. 'Orodino nishiki' prefers protection from the afternoon sun. 'Oridono nishiki' never truly reverts. Trimming back branches in the early spring (right before the tree leafs out) can lead to the best coloration on this variegated Japanese maple. Continual pruning every spring will lead to a heavy pink candy striping on the green bark of the tree giving an additional winter interest. This creates a garden for all seasons. 'Oridono nishiki' is a great choice to brighten up your yard.
