Acer shirasawanum 'Plum Wine'

Plum Wine Japanese Maple

Zones 5-9

‘Plum Wine’ is a brand new full moon hybrid Japanese maple that was recently introduced by Talon Buchholz. It was found from a seedling germinated in 2007. This Acer shirasawanum has a deep plum color in the early spring with light green-yellow stemming on the new growth and light green veins on the leaf. By late summer, more chartreuse comes into the leaf creating a nice two toned effect with the plum color. We expect ‘Plum Wine’ to reach 6-8 ft in height in 10 years. According to Talon, plum wine, known as umeshu, is an alcohol made from plums and is quite popular in Japan. Since Talon is quite fond of this smooth drink, this is likely where the name originated.
