Native Fruit Tree

Zones 4-8

'Ford Amend’ is an extremely early fruiting selection of American pawpaw that is extremely rare. Mid spring flowers develop into fruit for the fall. ‘Ford Amend' ripens extremely early in the season, much earlier than selections like 'Sunflower'. ‘Ford Amend’ was found in the wild and introduced in Portland, Oregon, in the early 1950's. The fruit is oblong and yellow-green to brown in color. The fruit is highly desired by fruit aficionados, native plant enthusiasts and homesteaders. Fall color on pawpaw trees is a bright golden yellow adding some garden interest to this edible ornamental. ‘Ford Amend’ may reach 15 ft in height and width in 10 years. For best pollination and a large crop of fruit, it is recommended to plant multiple types of cultivars or seedlings in an area.

The photo is a seedling from a pawpaw by Eric Barresi, not 'Ford Amend'. We are showing this to show how a typical pawpaw grows in the landscape.  Unlike seedlings, a grafted selection like 'Ford Amend' will consistently display the early ripening of fruit characteristic that ‘Ford Amend’ was chosen for.  We are using this photo to show the typical form of the the pawpaw tree.
