#384 Wallowa x Rhododendron alabamense Deciduous Azalea

According to Vivian Abney, everyone always loved her large ‘Wallowa Red’ azalea at her nursery, so she decided to do some hand crosses. This one in particular was a hand cross with Rhododendron alabamense originally labeled #384 WAL x AL. Eventually Vivian named this selection ‘Red Walloper’ as the blooms are a bright red and quite large. I really like the name as it describes this native hybrid in a very Southern way. ‘Red Walloper’ may reach 6-7 ft in height by 4 ft in width in 10 years. Like most deciduous azaleas, make sure to give 'Red Walloper' plenty of drainage and organic matter when planting.
