Cornus kousa

'Celestial'

White Flowering Dogwood

Zones 5-8

Partial Sun to Full Sun

Cornus kousa ‘Celestial’ is a stunning hybrid dogwood, developed by Rutgers University, and admired for its profuse, creamy white flowers that bloom in late spring. This small, deciduous tree typically grows with a more compact size of around 15 feet tall and wide after 10 years. It forms an elegant, vase-like shape, and its blooms, which appear after the foliage emerges, create a striking contrast against the deep green leaves, which turn a rich red-purple in the fall. ‘Celestial’ is also noted for its resistance to dogwood anthracnose and powdery mildew, making it a durable, low-maintenance choice for landscapes. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soils. In addition to its ornamental value, it produces small red fruits in late summer that attract birds.
