Cornus mas (Cornelian cherry dogwood) is a durable, multi-season small tree or large shrub valued for its bright yellow flowers that bloom in late winter to early spring, well before most other plants. It produces glossy red, edible fruit in summer that can be used for jams and syrups, followed by yellow to reddish-purple fall color. With a rounded to oval habit and attractive bark as it matures, it typically reaches about 12–15 ft tall and 8–12 ft wide in 10 years, eventually maturing to around 15–25 ft. Adaptable to a wide range of soils and conditions, it performs well in full sun to partial shade and is both low-maintenance and drought tolerant once established, making it an excellent choice for ornamental or edible landscapes.
