Rhododendron eastmanii
Native Santee Azalea
Zones 8-9
Rhododendron eastmanii is one of the rarest native azaleas in cultivation. It was just 1999 when this species was discovered in a few counties in South Carolina. Rhododendron eastmanii is sometimes referred to as the May White azalea because it often starts blooming in late May with white blooms. Thear white blooms often have a large yellow blotch on the top petal. Some have been known to display a pink blush. Rhododendron eastmanii has been found near limestone deposits and it is expected that this native is more alkaline tolerant than many other native azaleas. Make sure to give good drainage when planting. Rhododendron eastmanii may reach 6 ft in height by 4 ft in width in 10 years.
