'Rasen’ is quite a unique Japanese selection of cedar. The foliage is twisted and spiraled like ‘Spiralis’, however the overall form is narrow and fastigiate with more open branching. ‘Rasen’ may reach 15 ft in height by 4 ft in width in 10 years. ‘Rasen’ is Japanese referring to a barber pole that swirls and is narrow. Sometimes this selection is labeled ‘Rasen Sugi’, but “Sugi” simply means Japanese cedar.
