In the late 1970’s, Ken Twombly of Twombly’s Nursery in CT, found a compact growth shaped mutation on a red bloodgood-type of a Japanese maple at a church in eastern Connecticut. When this broom-like mutation was propagated it had a very unusual form. The name of ‘Twombly’s Red Sentinel’ which Ken chose describes this Japanese maple perfectly. These grafted trees remain tall and upright, yet fairly narrow, making it a great mid-sized flag-pole-like tree of color for small spaces.
‘Twombly’s Red Sentinel’ leafs out in the early spring as a bright red, maturing to a deeper maroon by summer. In autumn, the electric red fall color will grab your attention in the landscape. It will reach 8-10 ft in height by 3 ft wide in 15 years. Because of this shape, Ken recommends using this maple as a high class hedge.
1 gallon 'Twombly's Red Sentinel' are about 12-14 inches in height. Trees were potted up to 1 gallons in the spring and may not have completely filled out their pots.

Tree was like others have noted, way taller than expected, and packed supper well. Thank goodness Mr Maple knows how to pack their trees because FEDEX pratically through the package on the porch.
No soiled spilled and tree was unharmed, the box however was a different story. This was My first order and I am looking as we speak to order more trees. Thx guys.
Tree arrived in perfect condition, just a little bend but as soon as it was out of the box for a day it straightened back up. It was so easy to order here, will definitely be ordering from Mr Maple again.
I bought this Red Sentinel tree and received it within a week of purchase. It came carefully boxed up and looking oh so healthy. It was also taller than I had expected, which was a great bonus. The information Mr Maple provided to safely move it from box to ground helped it stay healthy until I could install it in our yard. They also quickly and thoroughly answered questions I had about delivery, care, and staking. I would highly recommend the purchase of this tree — which has gorgeous color and shape — or another maple from Mr. Maple.
This Twombly’s Red Sentinel is my eleventh Mr Maple purchase and my second Twombly. All are thriving and beautiful and this tree was in exceptional size and shape and already looks happily at home. It is, as was expected, a real beauty. And over the last few years Mr Maple has perfected their packaging, so that it not only arrived in great shape but was easy to unpackage.
Planted in winter 2025 and was excited to see the leaf size and color. It certainly does not disappoint for a small space. As always, great addition from Mr Maple.
