When a plant has a mutation that turns it to a polyploid, they get more chromosomes. This means they get showier, often in the foliage and the blooms. This is the case with 'Western Lights'. 'Western Lights' was found and introduced by Briggs Nursery as a polyploid mutation from the 'Orchid Lights' from the Northern Lights series of Azaleas. Like those bred by the University of Minnesota in the series, 'Western Lights' displays a great cold tolerance and hardiness. The leaves, stems, and blooms are thicker and glossier than 'Orchid Lights', 'Western Lights' creates a pink flowering show that you will surely enjoy in early-to-mid summer. 'Western Lights' may reach 3 ft in height and width in 10 years.
