Acer diabolicum, or horned maple, is a rare Japanese tree known for its distinctive horn-like seed pods. It typically reaches 10 to 15 ft tall in 10 years, developing a broad, rounded form. The deeply lobed leaves turn vibrant shades of yellow to orange in fall, and small red flowers appear in early spring before the foliage. The name diabolicum refers to the unusual horned structures on the back of its seeds—giving them a devilish, almost sinister look when collected. Almost diabolical.
