Acer palmatum 'Kaga kujaku'
Rare Kaga kujaku Budding Peacock Japanese Maple
Zones 5-9
In Japan, it is not unusual for the best gardens to have their own maple selections chosen for specific traits that can be only found in that particular garden. 'Kaga kujaku' is one of these selections. This Japanese maple was selected from the wild as a seedling from yama-momiji, also known as Acer palmatum ssp. matsumurae. The original Japanese maple tree resides in a well-known garden in the Ishikawa Prefecture of Japan.
This Japanese maple selection is brings an authentic Japanese style to the landscape. 'Kaga kujaku' unfolds in the spring with large heavily divided bright pink-red leaves. The leaves turn to a rich green by early summer. Mid-summer flushes return to a bright pink-red growth making a beautiful contrast with the deep green background. Autumn colors range from bright oranges to red. 'Kaga kujaku' will reach about 10-12 feet in 15 years. More information on this cultivar can be found in Yano's Book for Maples.
