Deciduous Native Azalea

Earl Sommerville Native Azalea

Zones 5b-9

‘Walter Ligon’ is a deciduous native azalea that favors partial shade and well- drained organic soils. ‘Walter Ligon’ is fairly heat tolerant. ‘Walter Ligon’ flowers from mid to late April producing a moderate cluster of light and bright pink blooms featuring a yellow blotch on each. The bloom is quite unlike any other azalea and stands out from the crowd. ‘Walter Ligon’ may reach a height of 6 ft height and 4 ft width in 10 years. ‘Walter Ligon’ was found and introduced by Earl Summerville who has introduced many native selections that brighten up gardens across the U.S. ‘Walter Ligon’ was named after one of Earl Somerville’s friends from the Azalea Society.
