The Full Moon or Shirasawa Maple (Acer shirasawanum) is a small deciduous tree or large shrub in the maple family (Sapindaceae) native to Japan. Named after Japanese botanist Homi Shirasawa, this slow-growing tree typically reaches a 12 to 15 ft after about 10 years. It thrives in well-drained, average moist soil and benefits from afternoon shade to prevent leaf scorch caused by strong winds or excessive sun exposure. The leaves are distinctive, rounded with 9-13 shallow lobes, and offer a spectacular display of color in the fall, turning bright yellow, orange, or red. Its compact size makes it an ideal choice for patios, containers, or as an understory tree.
