Acer palmatum 'Mikawa yatsubusa'

Rare Grafted Dwarf Japanese Maple Tree

Zones 5-9

Excellent for Bonsai

2015 Maple of the Year

When we go visit nurseries, we often ask the nurserymen and women, "What is your favorite Japanese maple? 'Mikawa yatsubusa' is definitely the most popular answer. When the North American Branch of the Maple Society started the Maple of the Year Program, 'Mikawa yatsubusa' won the first award.

'Mikawa yatsubusa' is a tightly layering dwarf green Japanese maple. In the spring, the leaves are bright chartreuse green with a red sheath to the petiole. This makes this dwarf with a layering shingle-like habit extremely beautiful. 'Mikawa yatsubusa' is extremely slow growing and difficult to propagate. Fall color on 'Mikawa yatsubusa' is a bright fiery red in the fall color. 'Mikawa yatsubusa' may reach 4-5 ft in 15 years. 'Mikawa yatsubusa' is extremely heat tolerant and overall, a very hardy tree. 'Mikawa yatsubusa' is great for container plants, small places in the garden, fairy gardens, and conifer troughs.

We have an extremely old 'Mikawa yatsubusa' at my uncle's home at Hill Stone Arboretum which serves as one of our display gardens. It is one of the largest 'Mikawa yatsubusa' that I know of.

Gorgeous, unique and hardy specimen.

While other cultivars are a bit more “finicky” with regard to sun exposure, general heat tolerance and a fairly precise amount of water, Mikawa Yatsubusa seems to have the ability to shed the mistakes of many new Japanese Maple collectors, myself included.

Despite reading over and over again things like “Japanese maples are adaptable to many soil types” and other nuggets of truth regarding cultivation and care, what is lost on the newcomer is that types of soil also greatly impact drainage and water content.

These things are all important because outside of a few popular cultivars- Bloodgood comes to mind, as well as Mikawa Yatsubusa, Japanese Maples do require a great deal of attention if you want them to thrive and be at their best during the months that they contain foliage.

You must carefully monitor moisture- THE FASTEST WAY TO FORCE LEAF DROP IS TO KEEP THE ROOTS WET. Also, direct afternoon sun or allowing/leaving moisture on the leaves and having the sun bake it off can result in scorch. Despite these things, and despite these things being true for Mikawa, I have found that to be much less true, and keeping a Mikawa is more forgiving for beginners vs other popular cultivars. The layered growth pattern of the leaves, the spring and fall colors, the gorgeous bamboo-like green bark on young species and the ease of care vs other popular varieties makes this one stand out. Cannot recommend enough!

My First Tree!

My first tree has arrived and it looks great! I chose Mikawa Yatsubusa as my first Japanese Maple and I am not disappointed. This tree is perfect for right outside my front entrance. I can’t wait to see the fall colors. I will be ordering more trees from Mr. Maple soon!
