Acer palmatum 'Lily Pad'

Rare Dwarf Japanese Maple Tree

Zones 5-9

Excellent for Bonsai

We are really happy to offer this exciting new variegated form of ‘Mikawa yatsubusa’. Acer palmatum ‘Lily Pad’ was a sport found on ‘Mikawa yatsubusa’ and retains that nice dense habit that makes it so popular. Tight dense foliage makes for a perfect platform for this swirling variegation. We have found ‘Lily Pad’ to be extremely stable in its variegation. ‘Lily Pad’ was found at Don Schmidt Nursery and named for its low flat shape. The overall habit is rounded, like a lily pad. We estimate ‘Lily Pad’ to reach around 3 ft in height by 4 ft in width in 10 years making this an awesome dwarf selection. When I first got this tree, I was really blown away by how elongated and swirling the foliage is. The leaf shape gives ‘Lily Pad’ a very unique, regal and elegant quality to it. It’s a mikawa with a ruffle and stable variegation! It makes my heart skip a beat! I think you will really enjoy this new dwarf Japanese maple in your garden. If you are an experienced collector who enjoys the "Mikawa Family Collection" or a novice just getting into gardening this new tree is going to be a must! Whether it’s in the ground or a pot this one is going to be a show stopper in your collection!

This is believed to be the first time ‘Lily Pad’ is available by mail-order.

Great expectations

I was startled b the brilliant red-orange leaves as I removed this little tree from its box this December. I hope to see a repeat every autumn.

Underrated, it’s SO GOOD!!!

I’m no expert but it seems in the realm of Mikawa types there are the ones with some form of color variation and the ones that just differ in size (big to miniature). I’m addicted and have a Mikawa type garden bed with the usual suspects like Sein kaku, Catalina, Koi, Japanese Princess, Tattoo, Mayday, Mystic and now Red Panda. Also have an Akita Yatsubusa in there (not considered a mikawa type by many) and I own Lima Gold but it’s not in this bed because I don’t consider it a Mikawa type (Some do). I plan on adding many more variants in the future. Now I’m not bragging, I just want to make the point that Lily Pad is completely different than all that I’ve mentioned. Yes, it a Mikawa but totally different in leaf size, variegation and habit. It stands out. By late summer when many of these variants look identical, lily pad does not. It’s AWESOME! Underrated and very hardy. It’s not the most expensive but it sure is one of the best. Picture is before I made the Mikawa type bed.
