Azalea 'Chinzan’
Satsuki Azalea With Deep Pink Blooms
Zones 7-9
Satsuki azaleas are popular for their use in providing good color in small spaces. This has made Satsuki azaleas extra popular for bonsai. ‘Chinzan’ is perhaps one of the most popular Satsuki azaleas to cultivate as bonsai. ‘Chinzan’ is a Satsuki selection that was found as a sport on the ‘Osakazuki’ azalea in Japan. Our good friend, Barry Yinger, imported this selection from Kairyo Nursery in Japan to the United States to Brookside Gardens in Maryland. Azalea ‘Chinzan’ has grown vastly in popularity since then.
’Chinzan’, which name translates as “rare mountain”, blooms with vivid deep pink 1.5-2 inch star-shapes blooms in late spring to early summer. Each bloom has a darker pink-red blotch. ‘Chinzan’ has been known to display a light pink-purple cast to the blooms. These blooms cover the plant creating a nice display. ‘Chinzan’ has a nice compact habit reaching 2-3 ft in height and width in 10 years.
All azaleas are 1 gallon containers and are not currently bonsai.
