Rhododendron canescens 'Chocolate Drop' Pink Blooms
Deciduous Mountain Azalea
Ernest Koone Selection
Zones 6-9
Yes, we know many of you have been asking for more deciduous azaleas. ‘Chocolate Drop’ is one of the must-have native mountain azaleas. The foliage is a dark red in the early spring through mid-summer. Late summer, the foliage may turn to an olive green. New growth flushes in the summer have some bronze red color. The buds on the blooms on ‘Chocolate Drop’ are a bright pink, opening to a white pink bloom. This is beautiful over the burgundy red foliage. ‘Chocolate Drop’ may reach about 6 ft in height by 4 ft in width in 10 years. ‘Chocolate Drop’ was found as a chance seedling when Clarence Towe, author of American Azaleas, was visiting Ernest Koone and looking through a batch of evaluation seedlings at his nursery. Clarence picked out ‘Chocolate Drop’ for its unique leaf color for further evaluation which led to its introduction by Ernest.
