'Penny Mac' is a gorgeous selection of hydrangea that blooms and sets flowers all summer long. Named after Penny McHenry, who founded the American Hydrangea Society, this selection was given to her as a gift in 1975. After 25 years of evaluation, she gave this selection to famed Dr. Michael Dirr, who was so impressed by its continued blooming and large bloom sets that he helped make this selection more popular in then nursery trade. Large blooms of pink to purple to blue cover this hydrangea, which may set new flowers during the summer. 'Penny Mac' may reach 4-5 ft in height and width in 10 years. The colors of the blooms of 'Penny Mac' are heavily influenced by the pH of the soil. More alkaline soils influence more pink color, while more acidic soils may cause more blue color to the blooms.
