’Ebony Fire’ displays purple diamond-like red blooms over dark black foliage. Perhaps one of the best red blooming crepe myrtle selections, ‘Ebony Fire’ starts blooming in late spring and continues all the way until the first frost in the fall. The dark black red foliage provides so much contrast in the landscape and garden. ‘Ebony Fire’ may reach 10-12 ft in height in 10 years. As ‘Ebony Fire’ ages, the peeling and exfoliating bark gives a nice year-round interest. ‘Ebony Fire’ was bred and introduced through a joint breeding program with Mississippi State University and the USDA. It has also been marketed under other trademark names.
