Rhododendron canescens

 'Gadsden County'

Deciduous Native Piedmont Azalea

Zones 7-8

‘Gadsden County’ is a Kelly Strickland Collection of native Piedmont azalea, Rhododendron canescens. Kelly Strickland was a native plant connoisseur and a native azalea guru. He was famous for being extremely selective among his collections, working to collect only the best forms of native azaleas. ‘Gadsden County’ is a collection from of Piedmont azalea that showed quite a bit of promise. ‘Gadsden  County’ has the fragrant pink trumpet shaped flowers of the species, yet this selection comes from older large specimens in Florida, toward the southern range for Rhododendron canescens. This southern distribution is key for making a Rhododendron canescens that will perform exceptionally well in the heat of the southern landscape and garden. Rhododendron canescens 'Gadsden County' blooms March-May. Give this azalea plenty of room as it tends to form large colonies. Make sure to give ‘Gadsden County’ plenty of organic soil and good drainage for easiest establishment for the plant. ‘Gadsden County’ may reach 6-8 ft in height by 4-5 ft in width in 10 years.
