Rhododendron occidentale

Native Western Azalea

A.K.A. California Azalea

White Bloom

Zones 7-9

Rhododendron occidentale azalea, also known as the Western Azalea, is an azalea native to California and Oregon. Found natively in wetland areas, Rhododendron occidentale likes to have adequate moisture, but doesn't like its roots to be submerged. The blooms on this Western azalea are quite spectacular, ranging from white to pink with large yellow blotch. These blooms form decent sized clusters in late spring to early summer. Not only are these native azaleas beautiful, but they are also extremely fragrant, smelling similarly to carnations. Rhododendron occidentale may reach 6 ft in height by 6 ft in width in 10 years. Make sure to give plenty of organic matter when planting with good drainage.
