In the 1920's a witches broom was found on a coastal redwood at Cambridge, which became 'Prostata'. In the 1970's Roy Lancaster found that a few trees of the grafts from this witches broom mutation had formed a more upright and conical form, which he named 'Cantab'. 'Cantab' has very wide blue-green needles, which are much wider than the typical species.  This thick foliage and dense foliage makes this tight growing dwarf evergreen quite unique and remarkable. 'Cantab'. 'Cantab' may reach 5-6 ft in height by 7-8 ft in width in 15 years. 'Cantab' is good in zones 7-9.
