Fagus grandifolia 'White Lightning'
Rare Weeping American Beech Tree

Zones 3-9

'White Lightning' is a newer dwarf weeping selection of our native Amercan beech. It was found in Chatham County, NC on an alpaca farm and introduced by the JC Raulston Arboretum. 'White Lightning' has a twisted and contorted habit that  forms an architecturally interesting shape in the garden. The white zig-zaging of the bark is why Mark Weatherton of the JC Raulston Arboretum named this selection 'White Lightning'. There are not many selections of native beech and this particular tree has proven to be quite a challenge to propagate. Mark notes this as one of the rarest trees at the JC Raulston Arboretum. 'White Lightning' may reach 5 ft in height by 8 ft in width in 10 years.
