Picea abies 'Cruenta' Rare Norway Spruce
Picea abies 'Cruenta'
Rare Norway Spruce
Zones 2-8
Picea abies ‘Cruenta’ is a unique and collectible Norway spruce prized for its brilliant spring display. For most of the year, this slow-growing conifer appears much like a typical Norway spruce, forming a narrow, upright tree with dense green needles. However, in early spring it becomes truly spectacular.
As the buds break, the new flush of growth emerges in a vivid crimson-red, creating a dramatic contrast against the older green foliage. This brilliant red display typically lasts for about two weeks before gradually fading to the standard green of mature needles. Cooler spring temperatures can help prolong the color, while warm weather may shorten the show.
‘Cruenta’ grows slowly, averaging about 4 to 6 inches of growth per year. After 10 years, it typically reaches around 4.5 feet tall and 3 feet wide, forming a compact, upright specimen that fits well in small gardens, conifer collections, and specialty landscapes.
This striking cultivar was selected and named in the mid-1970s by Swedish plantsman Tage Lundell in Helsingborg, Sweden, after he discovered a unique tree growing in a botanical garden. ‘Cruenta’ is considered synonymous with Picea abies ‘Lundell’s Red Needle’ and ‘Crusita,’ all referring to the same remarkable clone.
With its brief but unforgettable spring color and manageable growth habit, Picea abies ‘Cruenta’ is a must-have for conifer collectors and gardeners looking for something truly different.
