Japanese umbrella pines are unique, rare, and difficult to propagate. 'Fat Boy’ is a dwarf compact selection with a wide pyramidal habit. In 10 years, ‘Fat Boy’ may reach 6 ft in height by 5 ft in width. ‘Fat Boy’ was one of many Sciadopitys in the collection from Dennis Dodge. ‘Fatso’ is an umbrella pine that was found and introduced by Talon Buchholz with a similar shape. It may be that ‘Fatso’ is the correct name, but would take further evaluation to make sure they are the same plant.
