Acer palmatum 'Shirazz' Japanese Maple
Acer palmatum 'Shirazz'
Pink Variegated Japanese Maple
Zones 5-9
PP# 18,728 P3
One of my favorites. Found in New Zealand, this cultivar by Duncan and Davies Nursery is truly unique and is quickly becoming a favorite in the nursery trade. It emerges in the spring with purple-red to bright red leaves that are outlined by a pink-red variegation that make a statement in any garden. In full sun in North Carolina, late in the summer the older growth of 'Shirazz' will turn to a greyish-green with cream variegation. With protection from the afternoon sun, 'Shirazz' may hold it's spring color late into the summer. ‘Shirazz’ was found as sport off the cultivar ‘Geisha’. It was originally labeled as ‘Gwen’s Rose Delight’, then was given the trade name ‘Shirazz’. While this cultivar is similar to ‘Geisha Gone Wild’, many believe ‘Shirazz’ to be more red and taller growing tree reaching 10-12 ft in height in 10 years.
