Camellia × williamsii ‘Ballet in Pink’ is an evergreen shrub that typically reaches 6–12 ft in height, boasting glossy, oval-shaped dark green leaves 3–4 inches long with finely serrated edges. Native to China and Japan, this camellia thrives in warm climates, especially in the southeastern U.S. and along the Pacific Coast, where it can be enjoyed year-round. As one of the most widely cultivated camellia species, it has a rich diversity of varieties.
Flower buds begin forming in mid-summer, often appearing in clusters. Selectively removing all but one bud per cluster can help produce larger blooms. The flowers, 3–5 inches wide, appear in winter (December–March) in warmer climates or greenhouses, and in early spring (April) in cooler regions. While the species naturally produces single flowers with 5–8 petals, many cultivars—including ‘Ballet in Pink’—feature semi-double, anemone, peony, rose-form double, or formal double blooms. Flower colors range from white and pink to red, often accented by bright yellow anthers.
‘Ballet in Pink’ is a hybrid introduced by Clifford Parks in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 2008. It is officially registered with the International Camellia Society under the name ‘Ballet in Pink.’
