Camellia japonica 'April Tryst’

Cold Hardy Red Flowering Camellia

Zones 6-9

Part Shade

'April Tryst' is a standout in the camellia world for one simple reason, it goes where most japonicas can't. Hardy to Zone 6, it's one of only a handful of Camellia japonica selections you can put in the ground and trust through a real winter. 'April Tryst' was selected by Dr. Clifford Parks of Chapel Hill, North Carolina as part of the April Series, a breeding program built specifically to push camellia hardiness north. It's a seedling of C. japonica 'Yours Truly.'

The flowers are rich currant red in an anemone form, a single outer row of petals framing a dense center cluster of red and white variegated petaloids tipped with yellow anthers. Medium to large blooms, 3–4 inches across, appearing from February through April with heavy bud set over a long midseason stretch. The foliage is classic camellia, bold, glossy dark green that holds year-round and makes the red flowers pop.

Upright habit, 5–8 feet tall with roughly 4 feet of spread. Medium growth rate. Give it morning sun with afternoon shade protection, moist acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5), and good drainage. In Zone 6, site it somewhere sheltered — a south-facing foundation or a spot out of hard north winds. Prune after flowering.
