Fargesia dracocephala ‘Rufa’ (Dragon Head Bamboo) is a clumping, non-running bamboo that makes a great choice for a privacy screen or specimen planting. It has attractive, arching green canes and dense foliage, and unlike running bamboo, it stays in a clump rather than spreading aggressively by underground runners. It generally reaches around 6–8 ft tall and 4–6 ft wide in 10 years, depending on growing conditions. ‘Rufa’ prefers morning sun to partial shade and consistently moist, well-drained soil, and it is quite cold hardy.
