‘Emperor 1’ is one of our favorite red upright Japanese maples. Also known as 'Red Emperor', the early spring color of this Japanese maple comes out as an extremely deep maroon with a brilliant translucent sheen that gives the leaves a nice shiny look as the sunlight hits them. This 'Emperor 1' Japanese maple holds its rich, dark red foliage well throughout the summer months, and has a brilliant scarlet fall display. The underside of the leaf is a rich olive green.
The 'Emperor 1' Japanese maple makes a beautiful dynamic to the shiny red tops as the leaves turn blowing in a light summer breeze. ‘Emperor 1’ is a vigorous growing red Japanese maple though it stays midsized overall at around 15 feet in height. Hardiness is another great quality of ‘Emperor 1’. This Red Emperor Japanese maple tree handles cold conditions extremely well and is also very heat tolerant in the late summer. With all of its wonderful attributes ‘Emperor 1’ makes a perfect choice for a mid-sized upright red Japanese maple.

Hurricane Helen hit North Carolina hard, but I still got a gorgeous tree within days of ordering. Bravo! Instead of snipping off the branches like a lot of shipping nurseries, they gently curled the stalk, so my new Emperor Maple stands 4-feet tall with no broken or cut tips. Good root system, no shock during transplanting. I kept it staked until the leaves dropped to let the roots take hold. It's looking healthy and happy.

Again I'm amazed by the quality and size of the tree, close to 6 ft in the pot. How the h*ll do you guys fit these things in the shipping box? Beautiful tree, vibrant color. Awesome tree.

In the last couple months I’ve ordered over 10+ trees from Mr.Maple. I’m in Florida zone 9b, so not the most ideal conditions for Japanese maples but I have a glorious live oak canopy around most of my property. Easy to say I’m obsessed. Of course, I’ll have to report back in a few years to share what’s doing well and isn’t. So far I’m feeling great about it. All but maybe one arrived in great condition. The lace leaf maples seem to be more bothered by traveling in a box than the others. But to be expected in the summer! I definitely would go for it if you’re in my zone or close by. I have 5 in containers, and the rest are in the ground. None are in full sun.
